Kylee Gano as the Beedle in Reboot Theater's Sweeney Todd was a stand out performance this year. Not only does Kylee have the vocal chops to absolutely nail the part, but their ability to clown in the most serious way possible made this role --which is often portrayed as a self aggrandizing braggadocio-- into a flesh and blood person for whom we simultaneously have empathy for and repulsion against. Brilliant.

Marco Adiak Voli was memorable in "Fade" at Seattle Public Theater.

Andrew Litzky was memorable as Monty in "The Rules of Charity" at Sound Theater.

Kate Jaeger was memorable as Louise in Always...Patsy at Taproot Theater.

Peter Crook did a great Uncle Vanya for The Seagull Project at Act Lab.

Charles Leggett almost brought me to tears during his performance in Tiny Beautiful Things--That is very hard to do considering the last time I cried during a play it was 2004 and I watched a young Viola Davis get her heart broken in Lynn Nottage's Intimate Apparel on stage at the Round About in NYC.

Tanvee Kale did a great job in Devi.

That Lilian Afful-Straton acted her Ass off in Don't Call it a Riot!!!!!!! She gave us some of THE best acting in Seattle this season. I was completely sucked into her performance. She needs to be recognized.

Of everything I saw, Sarah Hartlett's Richard III with Upstart Crow Collective was the most memorable -

She brought a humor, vitality and potency to R3 that I've never seen attempted before. Sumptuous!!!

   -
Nom Survey - Favorite Performances

Pass Over at ACT had the most stunning performances from all three actors. The end of the play had a very audible and visceral reaction from the entire audience! It was incredibly moving.
The actors in Kim's Convenience were all amazing, but James Yi stood out above the rest as an exceptional artist.
I'm biased from working on it, but Brenda, Ayo, and Shermona in SPT's The Call were so moving to watch on stage. All three were powerhouses on their own, and together, they blew me away! (and they were the most amazing to work with, true SM dream cast)
I'm biased on this one too, as I am close to Mara Palma, but her performance glowed in Jitterbug Perfume at Nordo. The moments where she transitioned between characters on stage were very clear and meaningful. She has an incredible range. Jade, Helen, and Chris were exceptional as well.
Speaking of Ayo, her and the rest of the cast of Sheathed slayed me. The two lead women were so great together, and so strong on their own. I wish I could see it again!
The Devil and Sarah Blackwater introduced Seattle to a new powerhouse singer, songwriter, first time actor, Lauren Freman. I would have never known it was her first time acting. She was exceptional. And the chemistry between her and Emily's characters was electric! I need the soundtrack. Need it!
Michelle in GreenStage's Henry IV pt 2 was captivating! Such a stunningly emotive person to watch on stage!
There were too many, I can't think of them all, or possibly convey how much talent I saw this year!

Samara Lerman in Cyla's Gift at Taproot was absolutely captivating, telling a deeply personal and timely history lesson through her powerful storytelling.

   -
Nom Survey - Favorite Performances

Sarah Harlett as Richard III in the upstart crow collective performance was fabulous. her work demonstrated that it makes no difference who is cast as a particular role, it only matters how good the actor is regardless of their gender. Sarah's interpretation of Richard was deeply moving to me, and I would identify her work as the best performance of the 2018-2019 season.

I was also extremely impressed with the two young women, Libby Barnard and Madilyn Cooper (?) playing the leads in Dry Land at Seattle Public Theatre were also moving to me. Their handling of two extremely difficult characters surviving in difficult circumstances was subtle and honest.

The intensity of ensemble work for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time collectively created the best character work this year, in my favorite production.

Lisa Viertel, a Seattle treasure, driving the story of Jitterbug Perfume with her husky voice could not have been a finer treat in an excellent production.

Marco Voli and Ana Maria Campoy in Fade - AMAZING!

Obadiah Freeman's many performances in Kim's Convenience make me want to see Obadiah's one-person show. TREMENDOUS!

Reginald André Jackson and Carol Roscoe in The Agitators - We are still talking about their performances and the production overall.

* I am biased because I am affiliated with this production but West Side Story at The 5th Avenue Theatre had excellent choreography.

A lot of great shows this year! Also a lot of weird (in a good way) shows this year. Looking back at the full list of productions makes me appreciate the huge variety of theatre we have in Seattle.

Also a shout out to the workshops and readings that are being held throughout the season to include things like Beta Series at Village, which put out great shows that are constantly changing through out

I have not seen any play this season that was not well thought out, well-rehearsed and performed with great energy. Kudos to all of metropolitan Seattle's theater companies, large and small!

I'm still recovering from the intensity of "Pass Over" at ACT. The curtain call came and I didn't know what to do. Clap? Cry? Scream? A memorable and unforgettable theater experience.

It is amazing how Cafe Nordo is able to transform its space so thoroughly for each show. Always impressed!

MAP Theatre's Trevor was a lovely paring of Brandan Ryan and Teri Lazzara. They broke my heart.
Book-It's American Junkie. Difficult to watch, but an astounding piece of theatre
Citizen: An American Lyric as Sound Theatre Company was brilliant. It is a piece that might teach transcendence, given those willing to shut the fuck up and listen.

The direction/ choreography in Princess Ida needs special recognition.
Fine stage presence in Passing Over but also in the "good" productions noted above.

The terrific balance between avant-garde sensibility and humanity that WET has brought forth since Samie Spring Detzer became their AD.

This was a particularly strong season in Seattle! Lots that made me think hard, and lots that made me howl with surprise, delight and laughter. Thank you, brilliant Seattle theater-makers of all stripes!!!

This year I was disappointed by some companies that I had previously been impressed by. And impressed by companies from whom I wasn't expecting much. I feel that expectations were challenged this year in a big way, and I was very appreciative of that.

I see a lot of companies dealing with race in their work right now and I am very supportive of that. I think that is exactly the direction that our work needs to go in right now. I appreciate all the companies that are making an effort to have inclusive casting and production teams.
